Issue brief
Housing and Household Costs
How do we lower structural household costs without false price promises?
Our position
Expand housing and energy supply where appropriate; remove barriers to market entry; improve permitting and transportation; address documented anticompetitive conduct; publish tariff incidence; and stabilize unfunded commitments without shock cuts.
Why it matters
Affordability is purchasing power over time. Lower inflation slows price growth; it does not magically restore yesterday’s price level. Supply and competition matter more than slogans about greed alone.
Evidence
Official price series for food, housing, utilities, and medical care remain the accountability metrics. Construction rates, vacancy, and housing cost burden measure whether supply reforms work.
Strongest objection
Price controls risk shortages. US Populists evaluates emergency alternatives against distributional harm and evasion, and prefers durable supply reforms.
