Issue brief
Social Security Repair
How do we preserve a reliable retirement floor for the next 75 years?
Our position
Protect current and near-retirees from abrupt cuts; evaluate phased taxable-earnings expansion, targeted minimum benefits, and upper-income benefit growth changes with a common actuarial horizon.
Why it matters
Trust-fund depletion timelines are public. Pretending the problem is fake or that markets alone replace a floor both fail working Americans.
Evidence
Trustees project combined reserve depletion in the early 2030s with reduced payable benefits thereafter. Depletion is not zero benefits—but it is a real shortfall requiring honest repair.
Strongest objection
Retirement-age increases hit physically demanding work hardest. Any age proposal requires longevity and health disparity analysis. Market privatization of the floor is rejected.
